The first NASCAR Hall of Fame class of 5 has been announced, with little surprise.
Richard Petty
Dale Earnhardt Sr
Bill France Jr
Junior Johnson
Bill France Sr
No surprise to me of four out of five members. Junior Johnson was my only surprise, but that selection is fine. The Hall of Fame in Charlotte, NC isn't finished yet, but hopefully will be by the induction ceremony on May 23, 2010. Not to take anything away from any others nominated, but these people earned the priviledge of their pending inductions.
I certainly hope that the Hall of Fame doesn't turn into one big commercial of past and present sponsors, but that's exactly what's going to happen. One such artifact shown on Nascar.com was a Unical 76 Orange Spotter Ball that was once installed at Daytona International Speedway. Unical was the fuel sponsor for many, many years.
I hope what they do include are things like race cars from the inductees, videos from historic races, or even a section to retire car numbers. I doubt the last one will be done, but we can certainly hope. I'd certainly like to see Dale Earnhardt Sr's 1998 Daytona 500 car, or a car from Richard Petty. I'd also like to see the old Winston Cup Trophy, next to the new Sprint Cup trophy.
I've been to the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA. Besides plaques of the inductees, they also have a theater showing legendary games. I've also seen the Baseball Hall of Fame. They have lockers with items from the players, along with a display of baseball cards. Baseball cards are certainly a look at the history of Baseball. I hope the history of NASCAR is shown. Never before seen pictures of close finishes, such as at Daytona.
So good choices of the first five inductees to this Hall of Fame.
